Frequently Asked Questions

Program A and Program B run simultaneously and therefore the schedule will not allow for students to attend more than one program. The fieldtrip begins after both programs have finished and is open to all students who attend Program A or B.

Q - How much does it cost?

Q - Do I get Credit from the San Gemini Preservation Studies Program?

At this point SGPS is not offering university or college credit. The Units we offer are equivalent in hours of study and work. We are now in the process of negotiating agreements with to universities to have them offer credit for our courses.

Q - How can I get credit for taking the program?

SGPS has been a part of university programs for many years, both at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and John Cabot University in Rome. Right now we're in a transition phase and trying to arrange academic situations with other universities.

Students can arrange to get independent study credit from their own university by arranging with their professors to do so. We can furnish your professor and university with any information they require about our course in order to approve it as an independent course, or any other form of accreditation that you are considering. Please pass the director’s (Max Cardillo) contact information to your professor (mcardillo@sgsmail.org) for this information.

We can also provide certification that you took part in the course and completed all the class work and field experience, along with the syllabus. This would be a good addition to your resume if applying for further education or a job in restoration.

Q - How can I send in the required documentation?

Please send scanned documents by email if possible. Otherwise by mail to: Polly Withers, 203 7th Avenue, 5A, Brooklyn, New York 11215

Q - Is there financial aid?

We do not provide and are not aware of any financial aid, however, check with your university as some students are able to get financial support to attend our program. We can supply any information they may require. Also, some students apply for a loan from a financial institution.

Q - When will I find out if I have been accepted to the program?

As soon as we receive your application form we will let you know if there are any questions or concerns about your application. Final acceptance to the program will be issued on March 16th.  We occasionally have to put students on a waiting list if we get too many applications, which is why it's important to get that application fee sent as soon as possible, but you will be notified if this is the case.

Q - What about deposit refunds?

Before March 15th you will be notified of the final cost of the program and you will have an opportunity to withdraw if the costs have gone up at all. It looks like the value of the Euro is not increasing, which is a good thing, and we do not expect to have any large changes in the costs. The only issue that may affect the final cost for an applicant would be the question of earning credit. If you choose to earn credit through one of the institutions with whom we are setting arrangement, then there may be an extra fee (this has yet to be determined).

Q - Do I have to arrange for my own accommodation?

Housing is included in the cost of the program and is arranged by SGPS. The rooms are allocated on a first-arrive-first-serve basis.

Q - Travel Logistics and booking my flight

Do not book your flight until we have confirmed the program is going ahead (after March 15). Once you have completed your application and the program has been confirmed, SGPS will send you a travel logistics document that gives detailed directions for traveling to San Gemini and other suggestions regarding travel money, luggage, etc. We will also arrange for a conference call orientation nearer departure for final details and other questions.

Q - How much experience is necessary to be accepted to the program? Is it appropriate for me to apply to this program?

SGPS accepts students of varying levels of experience and from a wide range of disciplines. The application form is to give us an idea of what your experience level is and what your interests are. It is very rare that a student applies who is not appropriate to the program. However, we do sometimes have to put students on a waiting list if we get too many applications, which is why it's important to get that application fee sent as soon as possible.

Q - How many students participate?

On average we have 12 students with one lecturer/teacher per program. This number can vary from 8 to 15. This is our first year running the program on ceramics, so I cannot give an average, but we hope to have similar numbers. The field trip is usually part of the program, so in the past we have had the same numbers.

Q - How can I meet other students who may want to travel together?

You can sign up on our meetup site http://histpreserv.meetup.com/20/ or we can help you get in touch with other students once they give their permission to give out their contact information. We also have a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=62783932574

Q - Not taking the Field Trip?

The field trip was part of the program in past years. This year it is a separate, optional item that happens at the end of the program, in order to give students more flexibility in terms of money and time spent abroad. However, we do encourage students to stay on and come on the trip if they possibly can. The nine day trip to Sienna, Florence and Rome is a unique opportunity to do guided visits of actual restoration centers and sites that are sometimes impossible to visit independently. However, you will also have an opportunity to travel independently at weekends during the program if you cannot come on the field trip.
