Gallery: Parer Restoration Workshop - 18th C. Printed Book

Instructor: Prof. Konstantinos Choulis
Teaching Assistants: Giulia Barbero, Giovanna Greco, Valeria Arena

The paper restoration workshop usually begins by working on a very damaged printed book from the 18th Century, one that is neither rare nor very valuable. The book’s poor condition offers a good teaching opportunity for students. During the first 10 days of our program students learn the basic skills of paper restoration, working on this material. The project involves: disassembly of the block and the signatures, dry cleaning, washing of the sheets, drying and flattening, patching of missing sections and borders with new material, as well as consolidation of the paper wherever necessary. The final operation is the reassembly of the signatures.
